“Lord, Teach Us to Pray”

OPENING CHARGE

Prayer is not merely a religious activity. Prayer is the believer's communication, communion and cooperation with God.

Prayer is where we:

• seek God;
• know His will;
• receive strength;
• obtain mercy;
• confess our sins;
• intercede for others;
• receive direction;
• resist temptation;
• wage spiritual warfare;
• give thanks;
• and position ourselves for God's intervention.

Jesus did not say, “If you pray.” He taught His disciples, “When ye pray” (Matthew 6:5).

The disciples had witnessed Jesus perform miracles, cast out demons, heal the sick and teach with authority. Yet when they wanted to learn the secret behind His spiritual life, they did not ask:

“Lord, teach us how to preach.”

They said:

“Lord, teach us to pray.” — Luke 11:1

This is significant.

They understood that public power is sustained by private prayer.

WHAT IS PRAYER?

Prayer is communicating with God in faith.

Prayer involves:

• speaking to God;
• listening to God;
• worshipping God;
• asking God;
• thanking God;
• confessing to God;
• interceding for others;
• submitting to God's will.

Jeremiah 33:3:

“Call unto me, and I will answer thee…”

Philippians 4:6:

“In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

Prayer is therefore not simply asking God for things.

It is developing a relationship with God.

Prayer says:

“God, I cannot do this by myself. I need You.”

WHAT IS PRAYERLESSNESS?

Prayerlessness is the neglect, abandonment, reduction or complete absence of meaningful communication and communion with God through prayer.

A person can attend church and still be prayerless.

A person can sing worship songs and still be prayerless.

A person can preach and still be prayerless.

A person can carry a Bible and still be prayerless.

A person can even have past testimonies and become prayerless.

Prayerlessness occurs when:

• prayer becomes occasional rather than habitual;
• entertainment replaces devotion;
• sleep becomes more important than seeking God;
• prosperity produces spiritual complacency;
• unanswered prayers produce discouragement;
• sin makes a person hide from God;
• busyness leaves no time for God;
• answered prayers make a person forget the God who answered them.

WHAT IS THE PRAYER ALTAR?

A prayer altar is a consistent place, pattern and commitment where a believer regularly meets with God in prayer and fellowship.

It may be a physical location, but more importantly it is a spiritual discipline of meeting God consistently.

Biblical examples

Abraham repeatedly built altars to the Lord — Genesis 12:7–8; 13:18.

Isaac had a place of prayer — Genesis 24:63.

Daniel maintained a regular prayer pattern — Daniel 6:10.

Jesus regularly withdrew to pray — Mark 1:35; Luke 5:16.

Your prayer altar represents:

Consistency + communion + consecration + spiritual sensitivity.

When the prayer altar is neglected, spiritual fire begins to diminish.

“The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.” — Leviticus 6:13

WHY IS PRAYER SO IMPORTANT?

A. Prayer brings us into God's presence

Psalm 16:11

“In thy presence is fulness of joy…”

Prayer takes us from anxiety into God's presence.

B. Prayer gives us strength

Jesus said:

Matthew 26:41

“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation…”

Prayer strengthens spiritual resistance.

C. Prayer gives direction

Acts 13:2–3

The church prayed and fasted before making major decisions.

Prayer prevents us from making permanent decisions based on temporary emotions.

D. Prayer produces peace

Philippians 4:6–7

When we pray, anxiety is surrendered and God's peace guards our hearts.

E. Prayer releases divine intervention

James 5:16

“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PRAYER?

Prayer:

1. Deepens our relationship with God.
2. Builds spiritual strength.
3. Increases faith.
4. Gives divine direction.
5. Brings peace.
6. Helps overcome temptation.
7. Opens opportunities according to God's will.
8. Releases grace.
9. Strengthens the church.
10. Changes circumstances.
11. Changes the person praying.
12. Produces spiritual sensitivity.
13. Helps us intercede for others.
14. Enables us to receive God's wisdom.
15. Keeps our hearts dependent upon God.

WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS OF PRAYERLESSNESS?

1. SPIRITUAL WEAKNESS

Jesus connected prayerlessness with vulnerability to temptation.

Matthew 26:41

“Watch and pray…”

When prayer decreases, spiritual alertness can decrease.

2. INCREASED VULNERABILITY TO TEMPTATION

Prayer does not mean temptation will disappear.

It means we become better equipped to resist it.

Luke 22:40

“Pray that ye enter not into temptation.”

3. LOSS OF SPIRITUAL SENSITIVITY

Prayer helps us become attentive to God's voice and direction.

Prayerlessness can make a person increasingly governed by:

• emotions;
• fear;
• public opinion;
• fleshly desires;
• worldly pressure.

4. WEAK FAITH

Romans 10:17 teaches that faith comes by hearing God's word.

Prayer and Scripture together keep faith active.

When prayer and God's Word are neglected, spiritual confidence can deteriorate.

5. ANXIETY AND WORRY

Instead of taking burdens to God, the prayerless person carries everything alone.

Philippians 4:6–7 gives God's alternative:

Pray instead of being consumed by anxiety.

6. WRONG DECISIONS

Prayer gives room for divine wisdom and direction.

James 1:5:

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God…”

7. WEAK INTERCESSION

1 Timothy 2:1 commands believers to make:

“supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks…”

A prayerless believer becomes less effective in standing in the gap for:

• family;
• church;
• leaders;
• community;
• nation;
• unbelievers.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU REFUSE TO PRAY OR PRAY LESS?

A gradual process can occur:

Prayerlessness → spiritual dryness → reduced sensitivity → increased vulnerability → compromised decisions → discouragement → distance from God.

It may not happen overnight.

That is why prayerlessness is dangerous.

The problem is not simply missing one prayer meeting.

The danger is when missing prayer becomes a lifestyle.

CAUSES OF PRAYERLESSNESS

1. BUSYNESS

Luke 10:38–42

Martha was busy serving, while Mary sat at Jesus' feet.

Service is good.

But service must not replace communion.

2. SPIRITUAL LAZINESS

Prayer requires discipline.

Colossians 4:2:

“Continue in prayer…”

3. SIN

Sin can affect our fellowship and confidence before God.

Psalm 66:18

“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me…”

The answer is not to run from God.

The answer is repentance.

1 John 1:9.

4. DISAPPOINTMENT WITH GOD

Some people stop praying because a previous prayer seemed unanswered.

But delayed answers do not mean God has abandoned you.

Luke 18:1:

“Men ought always to pray, and not to faint.”

5. ANSWERED PRAYERS

This is one of the most dangerous causes.

A person may pray intensely when:

• unemployed;
• sick;
• looking for marriage;
• seeking admission;
• facing financial difficulty.

Then the breakthrough comes.

The prayer life disappears.

The danger is:

The gift replaces the Giver.

Deuteronomy 8:11–14 warns against forgetting God after experiencing prosperity.

10. BELIEVER'S BEHAVIOURS AFTER PRAYERS ARE ANSWERED THAT CAN PRODUCE PRAYERLESSNESS

Before breakthrough:

“Lord, please help me!”

After breakthrough:

“I can handle it myself.”

Before promotion:

Prayer.

After promotion:

Meetings, work and money.

Before marriage:

Prayer.

After marriage:

No more prayer.

Before business success:

Prayer.

After success:

“I am too busy.”

Before receiving the child:

Prayer.

After receiving the child:

No family altar.

This is spiritual danger.

Never allow an answered prayer to become the reason you stop praying.

JONAH 3:1–10 — A POWERFUL LESSON

Nineveh was under divine warning.

Jonah preached:

“Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.”

The people responded with:

• repentance;
• fasting;
• humility;
• prayer.

And God showed mercy.

Lesson:

Prayer and repentance can change the trajectory of a situation.

Prayerlessness says:

“There is nothing I can do.”

Prayer says:

“Let me take this matter before God.”

ACTS 2:42 — THE EARLY CHURCH

The early believers:

“continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

Notice the word:

CONTINUED.

They did not pray only when there was a crisis.

Prayer was part of their lifestyle.

ROMANS 1:9 — PAUL'S PRAYER LIFE

Paul said:

“For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers.”

Paul's ministry was not merely preaching.

He was praying.

A powerful ministry requires a strong prayer foundation.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:17

“Pray without ceasing.”

This does not mean speaking words every second of the day.

It means maintaining a continual posture of dependence upon God.

You pray:

• when things are good;
• when things are difficult;
• when you understand;
• when you do not understand;
• when you have received;
• when you are still waiting.

WHAT MAKES A QUALITY PRAYER?

A quality prayer should contain:

1. Faith

Mark 11:24

2. Sincerity

Psalm 51:6

3. Humility

2 Chronicles 7:14

4. Alignment with God's will

1 John 5:14

5. Forgiveness

Mark 11:25

6. Persistence

Luke 18:1–8

7. Thanksgiving

Philippians 4:6

8. God's Word

John 15:7

9. Repentance where necessary

1 John 1:9

10. Love and concern for others

1 Timothy 2:1

ADVANTAGES OF PRAYER

Prayer:

• brings us closer to God;
• strengthens faith;
• produces peace;
• gives wisdom;
• develops spiritual discipline;
• helps resist temptation;
• strengthens families;
• builds the church;
• releases intercession;
• creates room for divine intervention;
• aligns our desires with God's will.

IS THERE ANY DISADVANTAGE TO PRAYER?

Biblical prayer itself has no disadvantage.

However, there are wrong approaches to prayer that can become harmful.

A. Praying without faith

James 1:6–7

B. Praying with unforgiveness

Mark 11:25

C. Praying selfishly

James 4:3

D. Praying while deliberately continuing in sin

Psalm 66:18

E. Treating prayer as a magical formula

Prayer is not manipulation of God.

F. Refusing to act when God gives direction

Nehemiah prayed and built.

Nehemiah 4:9.

Prayer should produce obedience.

WHAT ARE THE FAILURES OF NOT PRAYING?

When prayer is neglected:

You may fail to:

• seek God's direction;
• recognize divine opportunities;
• prepare spiritually for battles;
• intercede for others;
• receive wisdom;
• maintain spiritual strength;
• discern temptation;
• develop intimacy with God.

Prayerlessness doesn't mean every negative event in your life is caused by demons.

Sometimes the issue is:

• poor planning;
• bad decisions;
• lack of knowledge;
• disobedience;
• negligence;
• unhealthy relationships;
• financial mismanagement.

Therefore, prayer must be accompanied by wisdom, obedience and responsible action.

WHY MUST YOU PRAY?

Because Jesus prayed.

Mark 1:35

If the Son of God maintained a prayer life, believers cannot afford to abandon prayer.

Because prayer is commanded.

1 Thessalonians 5:17

Because prayer changes things.

James 5:16–18

Because prayer changes us.

Philippians 4:6–7

Because spiritual battles require spiritual vigilance.

Ephesians 6:18

Because others need your intercession.

1 Timothy 2:1

HOW TO OVERCOME PRAYERLESSNESS

STEP 1 — REPENT

Say:

“Lord, I have neglected my prayer altar. Forgive me.”

1 John 1:9

STEP 2 — RETURN TO GOD

James 4:8

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”

STEP 3 — ESTABLISH A FIXED PRAYER TIME

Daniel prayed three times daily.

Daniel 6:10

Start with a realistic schedule.

Consistency is more important than pretending to pray for five hours and abandoning prayer afterward.

STEP 4 — START SMALL

If your prayer life has collapsed, don't become discouraged.

Start with:

• 15 minutes;
• then 30 minutes;
• then gradually increase.

STEP 5 — PRAY WITH SCRIPTURE

Use the Bible as your prayer guide.

Read a passage.

Turn the passage into prayer.

STEP 6 — REMOVE DISTRACTIONS

Put the phone away.

Turn off unnecessary notifications.

Create a prayer environment.

STEP 7 — ADD THANKSGIVING

Don't make prayer only a shopping list.

Psalm 100:4.

STEP 8 — PRAY FOR OTHERS

Intercession takes your eyes beyond yourself.

1 Timothy 2:1.

STEP 9 — FAST WHEN APPROPRIATE

Fasting does not manipulate God.

It helps us humble ourselves, seek God and intensify spiritual focus.

Ezra 8:21; Matthew 6:16–18.

STEP 10 — KEEP THE FIRE BURNING

Leviticus 6:13

“The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.”

HOW TO RE-IGNITE YOUR PRAYER ALTAR

THE 7-DAY PRAYER ALTAR REKINDLING PLAN

Day 1: Repentance — Psalm 51
Day 2: Thanksgiving — Psalm 103
Day 3: Worship — Psalm 95
Day 4: Spiritual warfare — Ephesians 6:10–18
Day 5: Intercession — 1 Timothy 2:1–4
Day 6: Personal requests — Philippians 4:6
Day 7: Consecration — Romans 12:1–2

Daily pattern:

10 minutes Word + 10 minutes worship + 20 minutes prayer + 10 minutes intercession + 5 minutes listening/quietness.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

Raise your hands and declare:

1. My prayer altar shall not die!
2. Every spiritual laziness assigned against my prayer life, break in Jesus' name!
3. Every distraction stealing my prayer time, be removed!
4. Every discouragement arising from delayed answers, expire now!
5. I receive fresh hunger for God!
6. I receive fresh grace to pray!
7. My spiritual fire shall not go out!
8. My family altar shall be revived!
9. My passion for God's Word shall be restored!
10. I shall not forget God after my breakthrough!
11. My testimony shall increase my prayer life, not destroy it!
12. I shall pray and not faint!
13. I shall watch and pray!
14. I shall pray without ceasing!
15. My prayer altar shall become a place of divine encounter!

DELIVERANCE & PRAYER POINTS

1. PRAYERLESSNESS MUST DIE

Prayer:

Father, in the name of Jesus, deliver me from every spirit, habit, attitude and pattern that makes me neglect prayer. Give me fresh hunger for Your presence, in the name of Jesus.

2. DESTROY SPIRITUAL LAZINESS

Every power of spiritual laziness operating in my life, break in Jesus' name! I receive grace to seek God diligently, in the name of Jesus.

3. BREAK THE POWER OF DISTRACTION

Every distraction stealing my prayer time and spiritual attention, lose your hold over me in Jesus' name!

4. RESTORE MY HUNGER FOR GOD

O Lord, restore in me a deep hunger and thirst for Your presence. Let my soul pant after You again, in the name of Jesus.

Father, let the fire upon my prayer altar burn again. Every extinguished spiritual fire, receive fresh fire in Jesus' name!

Lord, let my blessings never separate me from You. I will remember You in prosperity and in adversity, in the name of Jesus.

Holy Spirit, give me grace to establish and maintain a consistent prayer schedule, in the name of Jesus.

8. DESTROY DISCOURAGEMENT

Every discouragement caused by delayed answers to prayer, be broken. I receive grace to pray and not faint, in the name of Jesus.

9. RELEASE FRESH SPIRITUAL FIRE

Holy Spirit, breathe upon my spiritual life. Let fresh fire, fresh hunger, fresh faith and fresh passion arise within me, in the name of Jesus.

10. MAKE ME A PRAYING BELIEVER

Father, make me a person of prayer. Let my home become a house of prayer, my family become a praying family, and my life become a testimony of answered prayer, in the name of Jesus.

Isaiah 56:7; Acts 2:42

ALTAR CALL — RETURN TO GOD

The greatest solution to prayerlessness is not merely learning another prayer technique.

It is returning to God.

If you have never genuinely surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, or if you have wandered away from Him, today is the day to return.

James 4:8:

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
