INTRODUCTION

There are seasons in life when a person seems to be surrounded by troubles from every direction. One problem is followed by another. A person prays about one matter, only to encounter another difficulty.

Some experience physical pain, emotional wounds, financial hardship, marital troubles, persecution, rejection, prolonged delay, disappointment, family battles, oppression, sickness, loneliness, loss, anxiety, or unexplained distress.

The Bible does not deny that God's people can pass through affliction.

David said:

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.” — Psalm 34:19

Notice the two sides of that Scripture:

Affliction may come, but affliction does not have the final word.

The believer's confidence is not that trouble will never arise. Our confidence is that God is able to deliver, sustain, heal, restore and bring His children through the storm.

God told Moses:

“I have surely seen the affliction of my people… and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows.” — Exodus 3:7

God sees. - God hears. - God knows. - And God can deliver.

WHAT IS AFFLICTION?

Affliction is a condition of distress, oppression, hardship, trouble, adversity or suffering that places pressure upon a person's life.

Affliction may affect the:

• body
• mind
• emotions
• family
• marriage
• finances
• career
• ministry
• relationships
• reputation
• spiritual life
• future plans

Biblically, affliction can refer to severe hardship or oppression experienced by God's people.

Psalm 34:19

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.”

The Scripture does not say “some.”

It says “many.”

But it also does not say that the righteous will remain permanently under them.

It says:

“The LORD delivereth him out of them all.”

WHAT IS SUFFERING?

Suffering is the experience of enduring hardship, distress, loss, pain, deprivation or adversity.

Suffering may be:

• temporary or prolonged
• physical or emotional
• personal or family-related
• visible or invisible
• caused by circumstances or by the actions of others
• connected to persecution or opposition
• sometimes a consequence of wrong decisions
• sometimes unrelated to personal wrongdoing

We must therefore avoid the dangerous conclusion that every person who suffers has sinned or is under a demonic attack.

Jesus Himself corrected this kind of simplistic thinking in John 9:1–3.

The Christian response to suffering is therefore not condemnation but prayer, compassion, wisdom, faith and appropriate action.

WHAT IS PAIN?

Pain is an unpleasant physical, emotional or psychological experience that signals injury, distress, loss or suffering.

Pain can be:

Physical pain

• sickness
• injury
• chronic bodily pain
• weakness
• exhaustion
• disease

Emotional pain

• heartbreak
• betrayal
• rejection
• disappointment
• grief
• loneliness
• humiliation

Mental pain

• anxiety
• fear
• persistent distress
• troubling thoughts
• emotional exhaustion

Spiritual distress

• discouragement
• feeling abandoned by God
• prolonged unanswered prayer
• spiritual dryness
• guilt and condemnation

Some pains are visible.

Others are hidden behind a smile.

WHAT IS THE “SPIRIT OF AFFLICTIONS, SUFFERINGS AND PAINS”?

It can be used to describe a persistent pattern of oppression, distress, bondage, suffering or destructive circumstances that appears to resist relief and restoration.

However, biblical wisdom requires balance.

Not every sickness is a demon.

Not every financial problem is a curse.

Not every delay is witchcraft.

Not every pain has a supernatural source.

Affliction can arise from:

• spiritual opposition
• human wickedness
• injustice
• poor decisions
• natural circumstances
• sickness and disease
• accidents
• persecution
• economic hardship
• broken relationships
• grief
• consequences of sin
• ordinary trials of life

Therefore, we pray spiritually while also acting wisely.

GOD'S RESPONSE TO AFFLICTION

One of the most powerful passages for this message is:

Exodus 3:7–8

God said:

“I have surely seen the affliction of my people…”

Then He said:

“I am come down to deliver them…”

This reveals four dimensions of God's response:

1. God SEES affliction

You may be invisible to people, but you are not invisible to God.

2. God HEARS the cry

Deuteronomy 26:7 says:

“And when we cried unto the LORD God… the LORD heard our voice, and looked on our affliction…”

3. God KNOWS the sorrow

God said:

“I know their sorrows.” — Exodus 3:7

4. God DELIVERS

God did not merely observe Israel's suffering.

He acted.

WHAT ARE THE AFFLICTIONS, SUFFERINGS AND PAINS MANY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE?

Some people are experiencing:

Physical

• prolonged illness
• recurring sickness
• unexplained bodily pain
• weakness
• injuries
• reproductive challenges
• sleep disturbances

Financial

• persistent debt
• loss of income
• business failure
• unemployment
• financial instability
• repeated unexpected expenses

Marital and family

• marital conflict
• separation
• barrenness or reproductive difficulties
• family hostility
• domestic abuse
• loss of loved ones
• prolonged family disputes

Career and business

• repeated disappointment
• workplace oppression
• rejection
• stagnation
• failed opportunities
• unfair treatment

Emotional

• grief
• betrayal
• rejection
• loneliness
• shame
• disappointment
• discouragement

Spiritual

• prayerlessness
• persistent temptation
• loss of spiritual strength
• condemnation
• discouragement
• feeling distant from God

SECRET AND OPEN AFFLICTIONS

A. OPEN AFFLICTIONS

These are easily visible.

Examples:

• obvious sickness
• poverty
• physical injury
• persecution
• imprisonment
• public humiliation
• family conflict
• job loss

People can see the problem.

B. SECRET AFFLICTIONS

These may be hidden from everyone except God.

Examples:

• silent depression or emotional distress
• secret grief
• hidden marital problems
• private financial crisis
• concealed addiction
• fear
• shame
• internal wounds
• unanswered questions
• hidden spiritual struggles

Someone can look perfectly healthy outwardly and still be crying inwardly.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL AFFLICTIONS

Internal affliction

The battle is happening within:

• fear
• guilt
• anxiety
• emotional wounds
• discouragement
• bitterness
• shame
• confusion
• hopelessness

External affliction

The pressure comes through circumstances or people:

• persecution
• injustice
• oppression
• hostile relationships
• financial crisis
• workplace problems
• family conflict
• sickness
• difficult circumstances

Sometimes internal and external battles reinforce each other.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF AFFLICTION, SUFFERING AND PAIN

1. Physical affliction

Sickness, injury and bodily suffering.

2. Emotional affliction

Heartbreak, rejection, grief and disappointment.

3. Mental distress

Persistent fear, anxiety and emotional exhaustion.

4. Financial affliction

Debt, poverty, business failure and economic hardship.

5. Marital affliction

Conflict, separation, betrayal and prolonged marital distress.

6. Family affliction

Persistent family disputes, hostility and destructive family patterns.

7. Career affliction

Repeated rejection, workplace injustice and professional setbacks.

8. Social affliction

Isolation, discrimination, persecution and rejection.

9. Spiritual affliction

Discouragement, temptation, spiritual weakness and attacks against faith.

10. Generational or recurring patterns

Patterns that appear repeatedly across families or generations.

Such patterns should be examined carefully rather than automatically attributed to demons.

WHAT LEADS TO AFFLICTION, SUFFERING AND PAIN?

There are several possible sources.

A. Living in a fallen world

Suffering is part of the brokenness of the present world.

B. Human wickedness

Oppression, exploitation, violence, injustice and persecution can produce suffering.

C. Personal decisions

Some consequences arise from destructive choices.

D. Other people's decisions

A person can suffer because of someone else's wrongdoing.

E. Sickness and disease

Not every illness is caused by a spiritual attack.

F. Spiritual opposition

Scripture clearly recognizes the reality of spiritual warfare.

G. Trials of faith

God may permit seasons of testing without abandoning His people.

H. Environmental and economic circumstances

Economic downturns, disasters, accidents and difficult social conditions can produce suffering.

WHAT MANY EXPERIENCE DURING AFFLICTION

Affliction can cause people to experience:

• discouragement
• fear
• confusion
• anger
• loneliness
• frustration
• hopelessness
• spiritual exhaustion
• loss of confidence
• questioning
• sleeplessness
• crying
• withdrawal
• temptation to give up
• temptation to blame God
• loss of joy
• loss of motivation

This is why the afflicted person needs prayer, support, wise counsel and practical help, not condemnation.

WHAT AFFLICTION CAN CAUSE IN ITS VICTIMS

If prolonged suffering is not addressed properly, it may produce:

• discouragement
• bitterness
• fear
• unbelief
• isolation
• broken relationships
• financial deterioration
• loss of productivity
• spiritual weakness
• hopelessness
• loss of confidence
• unhealthy coping mechanisms

The enemy's desire is often to turn a season of suffering into a permanent condition of despair.

But God's purpose is restoration.

WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF DESTRUCTIVE AFFLICTION?

Where spiritual opposition is genuinely involved, its destructive objectives may include:

1. To weaken faith

2. To produce fear

3. To steal peace

4. To create discouragement

5. To isolate the victim

6. To destroy hope

7. To hinder progress

8. To damage relationships

9. To consume resources

10. To make the victim believe that God has abandoned them

Jesus described the destructive agenda of the enemy in:

John 10:10

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy…”

But Jesus continued:

“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

WHO PROMOTES AFFLICTION AND SUFFERING?

We must distinguish different sources.

1. Satan and demonic powers

Scripture recognizes spiritual opposition.

2. Wicked human beings

Some suffering comes through:

• oppression
• exploitation
• violence
• fraud
• injustice
• persecution
• abuse

3. Sin and destructive choices

Some consequences arise from human disobedience or unwise decisions.

4. Fallen-world circumstances

Disease, accidents, disasters and other events can cause suffering without a demonic sponsor.

5. Trials and testing

Some suffering is permitted by God for purposes that may include testing, refining or developing perseverance.

Important: God may permit a trial without being the author of evil.

AGENTS, INSTRUMENTS AND MESSENGERS OF AFFLICTION

Biblically, these may include:

• wicked people
• oppressive systems
• unjust authorities
• persecutors
• false accusers
• destructive habits
• sickness and disease
• poverty-producing circumstances
• demonic opposition

But we should not become obsessed with identifying human “sponsors.”

The Christian's primary assignment is not:

“Who is responsible?”

but:

“Lord, deliver me, give me wisdom, show me what I must do, and let Your will prevail.”

PLANTATIONS OF AFFLICTION

Some destructive conditions can become “plantations”—deep-rooted patterns that repeatedly produce suffering.

These may include:

• unforgiveness
• bitterness
• hatred
• persistent disobedience
• addiction
• fear
• destructive relationships
• unhealthy financial practices
• generational patterns
• unresolved trauma
• ungodly agreements
• occult involvement
• persistent sinful habits
• negative thought patterns

However, not every repeated problem is evidence of a demonic plantation.

Some require:

• repentance
• medical treatment
• financial restructuring
• counselling
• education
• reconciliation
• legal intervention
• boundary-setting
• professional assistance
• spiritual warfare

Often, deliverance involves both prayer and practical obedience.

THE POWER BEHIND SPIRITUAL AFFLICTION

Scripture recognizes:

• Satan
• demonic powers
• powers of darkness
• spiritual wickedness

See Ephesians 6:10–12.

But believers must never exaggerate the power of darkness.

Christ is greater.

1 John 4:4:

“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

The enemy may attack.

But he is not sovereign.

He may oppose.

But he cannot overthrow God's ultimate purpose for His children.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF PEOPLE WHO EXPERIENCED AFFLICTION

1. Israel in Egypt — Exodus 3:7–8

They suffered oppression for years.

But God said:

“I have surely seen the affliction of my people…”

Lesson:

A long affliction does not mean God has forgotten you.

2. Israel's cry — Deuteronomy 26:7

“And when we cried unto the LORD… the LORD heard our voice…”

Lesson:

Cry unto God rather than surrendering to despair.

3. Hannah — 1 Samuel 1:10–11

Hannah was:

• deeply distressed
• mocked
• burdened
• misunderstood

She poured out her soul before God.

Lesson:

Take your deepest pain to God in prayer.

4. Job — Job 30:30

“My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.”

Job experienced intense physical and emotional suffering.

Yet his story did not end in affliction.

Lesson:

Your present chapter is not necessarily your final chapter.

5. David — Psalm 34:19

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.”

Lesson:

Affliction is not proof that God has rejected you.

JAMES 5:13–15 — GOD'S PRESCRIPTION FOR AFFLICTION

James asks:

“Is any among you afflicted? let him pray.”

This is powerful.

James does not say:

“Let him surrender.”

He says:

“Let him pray.”

Prayer is a response to affliction.

James gives us a pattern:

Affliction → Prayer

Sickness → Call for spiritual support

Faith → Prayer

Confession → Restoration

God → Healing and raising up

HOW TO OVERCOME AFFLICTIONS, SUFFERINGS AND PAINS

1. CRY TO GOD

Psalm 50:15:

“And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee…”

Do not suffer silently when you can pray.

2. DEVELOP A LIFE OF PRAYER

James 5:13 says:

“Let him pray.”

Prayer is not merely an emergency button.

Build a prayer life before trouble comes.

3. MAINTAIN FAITH

Faith does not mean pretending that pain does not exist.

Faith says:

“I acknowledge my pain, but I refuse to believe that pain is greater than God.”

4. SEEK GODLY SUPPORT

James says:

“Let him call for the elders of the church…”

Do not isolate yourself.

5. CONFESS SIN WHERE NECESSARY

James 5:16 teaches confession and prayer.

But confession must not become an accusation against every suffering person.

Some people are suffering through no personal fault of their own.

6. FORGIVE

Forgiveness does not excuse abuse or injustice.

It means refusing to allow bitterness to become another prison.

7. BREAK UNGODLY PATTERNS

Where destructive habits are contributing to suffering, they must be confronted.

8. SEEK APPROPRIATE MEDICAL HELP

Faith and medicine are not enemies.

If you are sick, pray, and seek qualified medical care.

9. TAKE PRACTICAL ACTION

If the problem is financial:

• budget
• restructure debt
• increase income
• reduce waste
• seek wise counsel

If the problem is relational:

• communicate
• establish boundaries
• seek counselling
• pursue reconciliation where appropriate

Prayer does not cancel responsibility.

10. WAIT ON GOD WITHOUT GIVING UP

Galatians 6:9

“Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

THE POWER OF PRAYER IN AFFLICTION

James 5:13 gives the direct prescription:

“Is any among you afflicted? let him pray.”

Hannah prayed.

David prayed.

Paul prayed.

Jesus prayed.

The early Church prayed.

Therefore:

When afflicted — pray.

When confused — pray.

When rejected — pray.

When sick — pray.

When persecuted — pray.

When overwhelmed — pray.

When the answer seems delayed — pray.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES OF THESE DELIVERANCE PRAYERS

We pray:

1. For divine intervention
2. For healing and restoration
3. For freedom from destructive oppression
4. For the breaking of recurring destructive patterns
5. For restoration of lost peace
6. For restoration of lost opportunities
7. For strength to endure legitimate trials
8. For wisdom to identify practical causes
9. For protection from further harm
10. For testimony and transformation

POWERFUL PRAYER POINTS AGAINST AFFLICTION, SUFFERING AND PAIN

Prayer 1 — Cry for Divine Deliverance

O Lord, arise in Your mercy and deliver me and every member of my household from every affliction, suffering, pain and trouble that has become persistent in our lives, in the mighty name of Jesus.

Psalm 34:17–19; Exodus 3:7–8

Prayer 2 — Against Persistent Affliction

Every affliction that has refused to leave my life, hear the word of the Lord: your time is over! I command every persistent trouble to give way to divine intervention, in the name of Jesus.

Nahum 1:9; Psalm 34:19

Prayer 3 — Prayer Against Physical Pain

Father, let Your healing power touch every area of my body experiencing sickness, weakness and pain. Let every legitimate medical treatment receive Your blessing, and let healing and restoration manifest in my life, in Jesus' name.

Jeremiah 30:17; James 5:14–15

Prayer 4 — Against Emotional and Hidden Pain

O Lord, heal every hidden wound, secret sorrow, disappointment, rejection, grief and emotional pain that I have carried for too long. Restore my joy and peace, in the name of Jesus.

Psalm 147:3; Psalm 34:18

Prayer 5 — Against Oppressive Powers

Every power of darkness assigned to steal, kill and destroy the purposes of God concerning my life, be frustrated by the authority of Jesus Christ. I declare that the counsel of the Lord shall stand over my life, in Jesus' name.

John 10:10; Isaiah 54:17

Prayer 6 — Against Recurring Patterns

Every destructive cycle of affliction, suffering, failure, loss and pain repeating itself in my life and family, I ask the Lord to break every ungodly pattern and establish a new testimony of freedom, restoration and peace, in Jesus' name.

Galatians 5:1; 2 Corinthians 5:17

Prayer 7 — Against Fear and Discouragement

Father, every spirit of fear, despair, hopelessness and discouragement arising from my present circumstances, I reject you. Let the peace of God rule in my heart, and let my faith rise again, in Jesus' name.

2 Timothy 1:7; Isaiah 41:10; Philippians 4:6–7

Prayer 8 — Prayer for Restoration

O God of restoration, restore everything that affliction, suffering, pain, loss and adversity have taken from my life. Restore my health, peace, joy, opportunities, productivity and testimony according to Your perfect will, in Jesus' name.

Joel 2:25–26; Psalm 126:5–6

Prayer 9 — Prayer for Divine Escape

Father, make a way of escape for me from every situation that has become too heavy for me. Give me wisdom to know what to do, courage to do it, and grace to come out victoriously, in Jesus' name.

1 Corinthians 10:13; Psalm 50:15

Prayer 10 — Final Prayer of Victory

My Father, because You are the God who sees affliction, hears the cry of Your people and delivers the oppressed, let my season of prolonged suffering become a season of divine intervention. I shall not die in affliction. I shall live to testify of the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen!

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

Congregation, declare boldly:

1. I declare that affliction shall not have the final word over my life, in Jesus' name!

2. Every prolonged season of suffering is giving way to divine intervention, in Jesus' name!

3. The Lord shall deliver me from every trouble appointed against my destiny, in Jesus' name!

4. Every power stealing my peace shall lose its influence over my life, in Jesus' name!

5. Every legitimate sickness and physical pain troubling my body shall receive God's healing grace, in Jesus' name!

6. Every hidden wound in my heart is receiving divine healing, in Jesus' name!

7. I reject hopelessness, despair and fear; my confidence is in the Lord!

8. Every destructive cycle that has persisted in my life is being broken by the grace of God, in Jesus' name!

9. I shall not die in the place of affliction; I shall live and testify of God's goodness!

10. The Lord is turning my mourning into joy, my tears into testimony and my pain into a platform for His glory, in Jesus' name!

11. I shall come out of this season stronger, wiser and closer to God, in Jesus' name!

12. No weapon formed against me shall prosper, in Jesus' name!

13. The God who delivered Israel from Egypt shall manifest His delivering power in my life!

14. Like Hannah, I shall turn my burden into a testimony!

15. Like Job, I shall see restoration after my season of trial!

16. Like David, though afflictions may arise, the Lord shall deliver me from them all!

17. I receive grace to endure, wisdom to act and faith to overcome!

18. My pain will not destroy my purpose!

19. My suffering will not cancel my destiny!

20. My testimony shall be greater than my trial, in Jesus' mighty name!

CONFESSIONS AGAINST THE AGENDA OF AFFLICTION

Declare:

I belong to Jesus Christ.

I am not abandoned by God.

The Lord sees me.

The Lord hears me.

The Lord knows my sorrow.

The Lord is my refuge and strength.

I will not be destroyed by my present circumstances.

My affliction is not my identity.

My suffering is not my destiny.

My pain is not my permanent portion.

God is working even when I cannot see what He is doing.

I refuse to surrender my faith.

I refuse to surrender my hope.

I refuse to surrender my prayer life.

I refuse to surrender my future.

The Lord shall deliver me.

The Lord shall strengthen me.

The Lord shall restore me.

The Lord shall establish me.

I shall testify of the goodness of God.

A WORD FOR THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN SUFFERING FOR A LONG TIME

Perhaps you have prayed for months.

Perhaps you have prayed for years.

Perhaps you have asked:

“Lord, when will this end?”

Remember the words of God:

“I have surely seen the affliction of my people… and have heard their cry… for I know their sorrows.” — Exodus 3:7

God knew Israel's sorrow before Moses appeared.

God knew Hannah's tears before Samuel was born.

God knew Job's pain before Job's restoration.

God knows your pain today.

Do not interpret God's silence as God's absence.

Do not interpret delay as denial.

Do not interpret your present suffering as the final definition of your life.

Psalm 34:19 says:

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.”

The promise is not merely that you will survive.

God is able to bring you through.

IMPORTANT BALANCE: PRAY, BUT ALSO SEEK WISE HELP

A powerful deliverance service should never discourage people from getting appropriate help.

If someone is sick:

Pray + seek qualified medical care.

If someone is experiencing serious emotional distress:

Pray + seek qualified mental-health or counselling support.

If someone is facing domestic violence:

Pray + seek safety and appropriate legal/social support.

If someone is in financial difficulty:

Pray + make a practical financial plan.

If someone is trapped in addiction:

Pray + seek appropriate professional and spiritual support.

Faith does not mean refusing wisdom.

Proverbs 11:14

“In the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

CLOSING DECLARATION

Raise your hands and declare:

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I come before You concerning every affliction, suffering and pain in my life.

You are the God who sees the affliction of Your people.

You are the God who hears their cry.

You are the God who knows their sorrows.

Arise, O Lord, and let Your mercy speak concerning me.

Where I need healing, heal me.

Where I need deliverance, deliver me.

Where I need wisdom, give me wisdom.

Where I need repentance, give me grace to repent.

Where I need restoration, restore me.

Where I need strength, strengthen me.

Where I need courage, give me courage.

Where I need practical action, show me what to do.

Every power of darkness working against the purposes of God for my life, be frustrated in Jesus' name.

Every destructive cycle of affliction and suffering, let it end by the power of God.

Every pain that has become a permanent expectation, let divine intervention bring a new testimony.

I reject fear.

I reject hopelessness.

I reject despair.

I will not die in the place of affliction.

I will live.

I will recover.

I will be restored.

I will testify.

I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

In Jesus' mighty name, AMEN!

AND EXPECT GOD'S DELIVERANCE.
