THE GREATEST THINGS CHRISTIANS SHOULD SEEK FOR!

ANCHOR SCRIPTURES:

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” — Matthew 6:33

CENTRAL MESSAGE

The greatest tragedy in Christianity is not merely lacking money, position, marriage, career, influence or possessions. The greatest tragedy is gaining earthly things while losing the things that matter eternally.

A Christian must constantly ask:

“What am I really seeking?”

Because what you continually seek reveals what you truly value, and what you value eventually controls your heart.

1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SEEK?

To seek means to deliberately pursue, desire, search for, prioritize, and make something the object of one's attention and life.

Therefore, seeking God is more than occasionally attending church.

It means:

• desiring God above everything else;
• pursuing His presence;
• obeying His Word;
• seeking His Kingdom;
• loving what He loves;
• hating what He hates;
• pursuing holiness;
• desiring to please Him;
• making eternity your ultimate destination.

Jeremiah 29:13

“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

God does not want part-time pursuit from a full-time Christian.

2. WHAT IS MOST VALUABLE TO YOU?

Jesus asked a question that exposes the priorities of the human heart:

Matthew 6:21

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Your treasure reveals your heart.

If money is your greatest treasure, your heart will pursue money.

If recognition is your greatest treasure, your heart will pursue recognition.

If pleasure is your greatest treasure, your heart will pursue pleasure.

But if Christ is your greatest treasure, your heart will pursue Christ.

Ask yourself:

• What occupies most of my thoughts?
• What am I willing to sacrifice for?
• What makes me happiest?
• What makes me afraid to lose?
• What receives the best of my time?
• What receives the best of my strength?
• What am I pursuing when nobody is watching?
• If God removed everything I have, would I still love Him?

3. WHAT ARE YOUR SEEKING PRIORITIES?

The world teaches:

Money → possessions → position → pleasure → popularity → power.

Christ teaches:

God → Kingdom → righteousness → Christ → eternity → service → earthly necessities.

Matthew 6:33

Jesus did not say that Christians should never have material things.

He said do not make material things your first pursuit.

There is a difference between:

Seeking God and using God.

Some people seek God because they want:

• money;
• marriage;
• children;
• employment;
• promotion;
• healing;
• business success;
• deliverance;
• breakthrough.

But the greater question is:

“If God gives you everything you are asking for, will you still seek Him?”

4. MANY LOVE THE WORLD MORE THAN CHRIST

1 John 2:15–17

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world…”

The problem is not necessarily owning things.

The problem is when things own you.

A Christian can have money without loving money.

A Christian can have a house without making the house his god.

A Christian can have a successful business without allowing business to replace God.

A Christian can enjoy life without becoming enslaved to worldly pleasures.

1 Corinthians 10:1–33 — A SERIOUS WARNING

Paul reminds the Corinthians that Israel experienced extraordinary spiritual privileges:

• they were under the cloud;
• they passed through the sea;
• they experienced baptism;
• they ate spiritual food;
• they drank spiritual drink.

Yet many of them displeased God and were destroyed in the wilderness.

The warning is powerful:

Spiritual experience does not automatically guarantee spiritual faithfulness.

You can:

• attend church;
• sing in the choir;
• preach;
• pray;
• give offerings;
• speak in tongues;
• receive prophecy;
• participate in church activities;

and still allow your heart to pursue idols.

1 Corinthians 10:12

“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”

5. WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THE LORD?

This is one of the most important questions every Christian must answer.

Are you seeking God because:

A. You love Him?

or

B. You want what He can give you?

There is a difference between:

“Lord, bless me.”

and

“Lord, make me a blessing.”

There is a difference between:

“Lord, give me something.”

and

“Lord, give me Yourself.”

There is a difference between:

“Lord, change my circumstances.”

and

“Lord, change me.”

6. DO YOU REALLY LOVE CHRIST?

Jesus tested Peter with one question.

John 21:15

“Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these?”

Jesus did not ask:

“Peter, how much do you know?”

He asked:

“Do you love Me?”

And after Peter answered, Jesus gave him an assignment:

“Feed my sheep.”

This teaches us:

Love for Christ must produce service to Christ.

If you genuinely love Jesus:

• you will obey Him;
• you will serve Him;
• you will defend His truth;
• you will love His people;
• you will seek His Kingdom;
• you will win souls;
• you will flee sin;
• you will desire His presence.

7. WHO DOES YOUR LOVE FOCUS ON?

Colossians 1:5

Paul speaks of:

“the hope which is laid up for you in heaven…”

Christianity has an eternal dimension.

You were not saved merely to become comfortable on earth.

You were saved for eternity with Christ.

Therefore, the Christian must continually ask:

“Is my life preparing me for eternity?”

THE GREATEST THINGS CHRISTIANS SHOULD SEEK

1. SEEK THE LORD

Psalm 27:4

“One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after…”

God Himself must become our greatest pursuit.

Solution to spiritual dryness:

Return to:

• prayer;
• Scripture;
• worship;
• fellowship;
• obedience;
• fasting;
• personal devotion.

2. SEEK THE WORD OF GOD

Matthew 4:4

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

The Word corrects you before destruction corrects you.

The Word exposes:

• wrong motives;
• hidden sin;
• false doctrine;
• worldly priorities;
• spiritual laziness.

Psalm 119:105

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

3. SEEK THE KINGDOM OF GOD

Matthew 6:33

The Kingdom must be first.

Not:

“God and my business.”

But:

“God first, and my business under God.”

Not:

“God and my career.”

But:

“My career under God's government.”

4. SEEK THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD

Matthew 6:33

The Christian must seek not only God's blessings but God's character.

Seek:

• holiness;
• truth;
• purity;
• integrity;
• justice;
• obedience;
• righteousness.

Hebrews 12:14

“Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.”

5. SEEK THE LOVE OF GOD

1 Corinthians 13:1–3

Spiritual gifts without love are empty.

You can have:

• knowledge without love;
• prophecy without love;
• faith without love;
• generosity without love;

and still miss God's heart.

The greatest Christian life is not merely powerful, it is loving.

6. SEEK THE NAME OF JESUS

Philippians 2:9–11

God has highly exalted Jesus and given Him:

“a name which is above every name.”

The greatest name is not:

• your family name;
• your professional title;
• your political connection;
• your financial status.

It is:

JESUS!

Every knee will bow.

Every tongue will confess.

Therefore, Christians should seek to honour, proclaim, defend and glorify the name of Jesus.

7. SEEK TO WIN SOULS FOR CHRIST

Proverbs 11:30

“He that winneth souls is wise.”

Daniel 12:3

Those who turn many to righteousness shall shine.

The greatest investment you can make is not merely in property.

It is in people whose souls will live forever.

Ask yourself:

“How many people have come closer to Christ because of me?”

8. SEEK THE THINGS OF GOD

1 Corinthians 15:58

“Be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…”

Do not only ask:

“What can God do for me?”

Ask:

“What can God do through me?”

9. SEEK TO BE USEFUL IN GOD'S HOUSE

2 Timothy 2:20–21

God desires vessels that are:

• clean;
• available;
• useful;
• prepared for good works.

The question is not merely:

“Am I attending church?”

But:

“Am I useful to God?”

There must be something in God's Kingdom that benefits because you are available.

10. SEEK TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE THINGS OF GOD

1 Chronicles 29:9

David's people rejoiced because they offered willingly toward God's house.

You can contribute through:

• prayer;
• evangelism;
• finances;
• skills;
• time;
• service;
• encouragement;
• discipleship;
• practical support.

Do not only consume in God's house.

Contribute.

11. SEEK TO FORSAKE SIN

Isaiah 55:6–7

“Seek ye the LORD while he may be found…”

The person seeking God must abandon wickedness.

You cannot genuinely pursue God while deliberately pursuing sin.

Romans 6:12

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body…”

12. DO NOT TOY WITH THE GIFTS OF ETERNITY

Your:

• salvation;
• calling;
• spiritual gifts;
• time;
• opportunities;
• divine assignments;

are eternal investments.

Ephesians 5:15–16

“Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

Do not waste your life on things that will not matter in eternity.

13. SEEK TO PLEASE THE LORD

2 Corinthians 5:9

“Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.”

The greatest question at the end of life will not be:

“Did I impress people?”

It will be:

“Did I please God?”

14. SEEK TO REIGN WITH CHRIST

2 Timothy 2:12

“If we suffer, we shall also reign with him…”

Our earthly life is preparation for an eternal kingdom.

Do not exchange eternal authority for temporary pleasure.

WHY MUST CHRISTIANS SEEK TO PLEASE THE LORD?

1. Because He created us

Revelation 4:11

We exist ultimately for His pleasure and glory.

2. Because Christ died for us

2 Corinthians 5:14–15

We should no longer live for ourselves but for Him.

3. Because we will give account

Romans 14:12

“So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”

4. Because earthly life is temporary

James 4:14

Life is like a vapour.

5. Because eternity is permanent

John 14:1–3

Christ has prepared an eternal dwelling for His people.

BENEFITS OF SEEKING TO PLEASE THE LORD

1. Divine approval

CONSEQUENCES OF NOT SEEKING TO PLEASE GOD

1. Spiritual emptiness

5. Loss of eternal rewards

Matthew 7:21–23

Not everyone who calls Jesus “Lord” will enter the Kingdom.

That is a sobering warning.

THE GREAT LESSON FROM 1 CORINTHIANS 10

Israel had:

Experience without endurance.
Privilege without obedience.
Miracles without faithfulness.
Spiritual food without spiritual discipline.

Therefore:

Do not let your spiritual experiences deceive you into thinking that you no longer need obedience.

1 Corinthians 10:31

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”

That is the Christian's ultimate standard.

DELIVERANCE FROM WRONG SEEKING

Prayer Points

1. Father, deliver me from every misplaced priority that has taken Your place in my heart, in the name of Jesus.

2. Every power making worldly things more important to me than Christ, break your hold over my life, in the name of Jesus.

3. O Lord, deliver me from the love of money, materialism, pride and vain glory, in the name of Jesus.

4. Every idol competing with God for my heart, be destroyed, in the name of Jesus.

5. Father, deliver me from seeking Your hands while neglecting Your face, in the name of Jesus.

6. Every spiritual appetite that has died in me, come alive again, in the name of Jesus.

7. O Lord, restore my hunger for prayer and Your Word, in the name of Jesus.

8. Every power turning my heart away from Christ, be broken, in the name of Jesus.

9. I break every covenant with worldly lust and sinful pleasure, in the name of Jesus.

10. Every distraction assigned to make me miss my eternal purpose, be removed, in the name of Jesus.

11. Father, deliver me from spiritual laziness and make me fervent in Your service, in the name of Jesus.

12. Every power wasting my time, gifts, opportunities and spiritual resources, be destroyed, in the name of Jesus.

13. O Lord, deliver me from hypocrisy and give me a genuine heart for You, in the name of Jesus.

14. Every hidden sin preventing me from pleasing God, be exposed and uprooted, in the name of Jesus.

15. Father, separate me from every friendship, habit and influence drawing me away from You, in the name of Jesus.

PROPHETIC WARFARE PRAYERS

Raise your voice and pray:

1. Every satanic agenda to make me lose my eternal inheritance, scatter by fire, in the name of Jesus.

2. Every altar calling my heart away from Christ, catch fire, in the name of Jesus.

3. Every power turning my attention from the Kingdom of God to the things of this world, be broken, in the name of Jesus.

4. Every spiritual chain tying me to habitual sin, break now, in the name of Jesus.

5. Every demonic influence manipulating my priorities, lose your hold, in the name of Jesus.

6. I recover every wasted spiritual opportunity, in the name of Jesus.

7. I recover my prayer life, in the name of Jesus.

8. I recover my hunger for God's Word, in the name of Jesus.

9. I recover my passion for soul winning, in the name of Jesus.

10. I recover my usefulness in God's house, in the name of Jesus.

11. I receive grace to finish my Christian race well, in the name of Jesus.

12. I shall not exchange eternal glory for temporary pleasure, in the name of Jesus.

13. I shall not lose my crown, in the name of Jesus.

14. I shall not become spiritually cold, in the name of Jesus.

15. My heart shall belong completely to Jesus Christ, in the name of Jesus.

PERSONAL CALL TO REPENTANCE

Beloved, the question today is not:

“Are you a Christian?”

The deeper question is:

“What are you seeking?”

You may have been seeking:

• money more than God;
• marriage more than Christ;
• career more than Christ;
• business more than Christ;
• recognition more than Christ;
• pleasure more than Christ;
• people's approval more than God's approval.

Today, the Holy Spirit is calling you back.

Matthew 6:33

Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.

Put Christ back at the centre.

REDEDICATION PRAYER

Lord Jesus, I come before You today. I confess that there have been times when I have sought other things more than I have sought You. Forgive me.

I repent of every misplaced priority, every idol, every worldly affection, every hidden sin, every spiritual laziness and every attitude that has taken Your place in my heart.

From today, I choose You again.

Give me a heart that loves Your presence, desires Your Word, seeks Your Kingdom, pursues righteousness, wins souls, serves Your house and longs for heaven.

Deliver me from everything that competes with You.

Let my life bring You pleasure. Let my gifts serve Your purpose. Let my resources advance Your Kingdom. Let my time count for eternity.

Lord Jesus, You are my greatest treasure. You are my greatest pursuit. You are my Lord, my Saviour and my eternal hope.

Help me to finish well and reign with You in eternity.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

SUNDAY DECLARATIONS

Raise your right hand and declare:

1. Jesus Christ is the greatest treasure of my life, in the name of Jesus.

2. I seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, in the name of Jesus.

3. My heart shall not be captured by the love of this world, in the name of Jesus.

4. Every idol competing with Christ in my life is destroyed, in the name of Jesus.

5. My hunger for God shall never die, in the name of Jesus.

6. I receive grace to forsake every sinful habit, in the name of Jesus.

FINAL PROPHETIC DECLARATION

Thus saith the Lord:

Your priorities are being reordered.

Your hunger for God is coming alive again.

Every strange appetite that has competed with Christ is losing its power.

Every chain of spiritual lukewarmness is broken.

Your prayer altar shall burn again.

Your love for the Word shall increase.

Your passion for souls shall return.

Your usefulness in God's house shall be restored.

You shall not waste the gifts, opportunities and years that God has entrusted to you.

You shall not exchange eternity for temporary pleasure.

You shall seek the Lord while He may be found.

You shall seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.

You shall please the Lord in your generation.

You shall finish your race.

You shall keep the faith.

You shall receive your crown.

And when the trumpet sounds, you shall reign with Christ in glory.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen!

CLOSING CHARGE

Do not spend your entire life pursuing what will disappear when you die.

Money will remain behind.
Buildings will remain behind.
Cars will remain behind.
Titles will remain behind.
Certificates will remain behind.
Earthly applause will remain behind.

But your relationship with Christ, your obedience to God, your souls won, your service to God's Kingdom and your eternal inheritance matter forever.

Therefore:

SEEK GOD.
SEEK HIS KINGDOM.
SEEK HIS WORD.
SEEK HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS.
SEEK HIS LOVE.
SEEK HIS PRESENCE.
SEEK TO PLEASE HIM.
SEEK TO WIN SOULS.
SEEK TO BE USEFUL IN HIS HOUSE.
SEEK THE THINGS THAT WILL MATTER IN ETERNITY.

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” — Philippians 1:21

JESUS MUST BECOME OUR GREATEST SEEKING, OUR GREATEST TREASURE AND OUR GREATEST REWARD.
