THE CAPABILITIES AND NECESSITY OF PRAISING AND WORSHIPPING GOD

Text: 2 Chronicles 20:1–30

1. INTRODUCTION

Praising and worshipping God is not a religious routine; it is a spiritual weapon, a covenantal response, and a divine strategy ordained by God for victorious living.
In 2 Chronicles 20, Judah faced a national crisis, an overwhelming coalition of enemies. No military advantage, no political leverage, only God.

Yet, through praise and worship, God gave Judah total victory without physical combat.

This account reveals what praise can do and why worship is indispensable for believers.

“The battle is not yours, but God’s.” – 2 Chronicles 20:15

2. BACKGROUND OF 2 CHRONICLES 20:1–30

• King Jehoshaphat ruled Judah

• A great multitude from Moab, Ammon, and Mount Seir came against Judah

• Judah was:

  • Outnumbered

  • Strategically disadvantaged

  • Humanly helpless

Jehoshaphat’s response:

1. Fear acknowledged (v.3)

2. Prayer initiated

3. Fasting proclaimed

4. Praise and worship institutionalized

This combination released divine intervention.

3. DEFINING PRAISE AND WORSHIP

Praise

• Public and vocal acknowledgment of God’s acts and greatness

• Hebrew words:

  • Tehillah – spontaneous praise

  • Yadah – praise with lifted hands

  • Halal – exuberant celebration

“Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.” – Psalm 150:6

Worship

• Deep reverence and surrender to God’s person and authority

• Hebrew word:

  • Shachah – to bow, to submit

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24

4. THE NECESSITY OF PRAISE AND WORSHIP

(Why Praise and Worship Are Not Optional)

1. Praise and Worship Invite God’s Presence

“But You are holy, enthroned in the praises of Israel.” – Psalm 22:3

In 2 Chronicles 20, God spoke after worship began.

2. Praise Shifts Focus from Problems to God

Jehoshaphat prayed:

“We have no power… nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.” – v.12

Praise realigns spiritual vision.

3. Praise Releases Divine Instructions

God’s strategy came after prayer and worship:

• Do not fight

• Stand still

• Watch God work

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.” – Psalm 32:8

They praised before victory, not after.

Faith praises God in advance.

Judah returned with joy, not fear.

“The realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around.” – v.30

1. Praise Confuses and Defeats Enemies

“The LORD set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir.” – v.22

Enemies destroyed themselves.

Praise and worship are not just for earthly victory; they are preparation for eternity.

“And they sang a new song…” – Revelation 5:9

If we will worship Him here, we will reign with Him forever.
