THE POWER AND GRACE TO BE A CHRISTLIKE / GODLY ROLE MODEL

Main Texts:

  • 1 Corinthians 11:1“Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”
  • Titus 2:6–8“In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works…”
  • Matthew 5:14–16“Ye are the light of the world… let your light so shine before men…”
  • Romans 8:29“For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son…”

Introduction:

Every generation seeks models, examples to emulate. Unfortunately, many of today’s “role models” are shaped by fame, wealth, or social media rather than godliness and integrity. Yet, God’s design is for His people to reflect the life of Christ so that others may see the beauty of holiness and be drawn to Him.

To be a Christlike role model is not achieved by mere willpower or moral discipline; it is by divine power and grace, the enablement of the Holy Spirit that transforms character, renews the mind, and produces the fruits of righteousness.

I. Understanding a Christlike Role Model

1. Definition:

A Christlike role model is someone whose life mirrors the character, compassion, truth, humility, obedience, and love of Jesus Christ in daily living.

2. Biblical Examples:

  • Jesus Christ – the perfect example of obedience and humility (Philippians 2:5–8).
  • Paul – who called others to imitate him as he imitated Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1).
  • Timothy – known for his sincerity and faithful service (Philippians 2:20–22).
  • Daniel – distinguished by integrity and an excellent spirit (Daniel 6:3–4).
  • Joseph – faithful in temptation and trials, reflecting God’s character (Genesis 39).

II. The Power Behind a Godly Example

1. The Power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8)

It is the Holy Spirit who empowers believers to live above sin and bear godly fruit (Galatians 5:22–23).
Without the Spirit, moral efforts end in hypocrisy or burnout. With the Spirit, holiness becomes lifestyle.

2. The Power of the Word (Psalm 119:9, 11)

God’s Word purifies, instructs, and equips us to be examples in speech, conduct, love, and faith (1 Timothy 4:12).

3. The Power of Prayer (Luke 22:40–46)

Prayer brings divine strength to overcome temptation, endure trials, and remain consistent in righteousness.

4. The Power of the Cross (Galatians 2:20)

When self is crucified and Christ lives through us, people see Him, not us, in our words and actions.

III. The Grace to Remain Consistent

1. Grace for Transformation (2 Corinthians 3:18)

Grace is not just pardon from sin; it is power for change. God’s grace shapes us daily into Christ’s image.

2. Grace for Discipline (Titus 2:11–12)

Grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.

3. Grace for Endurance (2 Timothy 2:1–3)

Grace sustains us when misunderstood, persecuted, or tempted to compromise.

4. Grace for Influence (Matthew 5:13–16)

Through grace, we become salt and light, influencing others positively without losing our spiritual flavour.

IV. Marks of a True Godly Role Model

  1. Integrity – consistency between what you say and do.
  2. Humility – giving glory to God for every success.
  3. Love – genuine care and compassion for others.
  4. Faithfulness – reliability in service and stewardship.
  5. Purity – a clean heart and blameless conduct.
  6. Teachability – openness to correction and growth.
  7. Courage – standing for truth even when alone.
  8. Self-control – mastery over anger, desires, and words.
  9. Servant Spirit – putting others’ needs above self.
  10. Spiritual Influence – inspiring others toward righteousness.

V. Steps to Becoming a Christlike Role Model

  1. Surrender to Christ fully (Romans 12:1–2).
  2. Study and obey God’s Word daily.
  3. Seek infilling of the Holy Spirit continually.
  4. Be accountable to mentors and believers.
  5. Walk in love and forgiveness.
  6. Model godliness in your family, workplace, and church.
  7. Endure trials gracefully; your response teaches others.
  8. Pray for sustaining grace daily.

VI. Lessons and Reflections

ILLUSTRATIONS

1: The Living Bible

A missionary once said, You may be the only Bible some people ever read.”
Your life, your patience, kindness, speech, and honesty, is the living Bible that preaches louder than any sermon.

Lesson: Live so that others see Jesus through you.

2. The Broken Mirror

A young boy broke a mirror and cried. His father said, “Son, the mirror is not gone; it’s only broken. When you pick up the pieces, they still reflect light.”
So it is with believers, even when we stumble, God’s grace restores us to shine again.

Lesson: Grace doesn’t end with failure; it restores and empowers.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Are you a godly example to your family, colleagues, and friends?
Have your actions brought others closer to or farther from Christ?
Ask God to cleanse your heart, restore integrity, and pour His Spirit afresh upon you.

“Lord, make me a vessel that reflects Your glory and leads others to You.”

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus, I confess that I have not always been the example You want me to be.
Forgive my inconsistency and weakness.
Wash me by Your blood and fill me with Your Holy Spirit.
Empower me to walk as You walked, that others may see You in me.
From today, I receive Your grace and power to live a life worthy of imitation, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

HYMNS

1. “Take My Life and Let It Be”Frances R. Havergal (1874)

(A prayer of surrender and consecration.)

Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise…

2. “O To Be Like Thee!”Thomas O. Chisholm (1897)

O to be like Thee, blessed Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

TODAY’S CHALLENG

Let someone see Christ through you today.
Be intentional about reflecting godliness in words, reactions, and relationships.

DEEP REFLECTION

If your life were a message, what would it say about Christ?
Would people desire to know Him more because of your example?

ENCOURAGEMENT

You are not called to impress people, but to influence them toward Christ.
The same Spirit that made Jesus victorious lives in you, walk in that power!

CLOSING DECLARATION

“By the power of the Holy Spirit, I receive grace to live as a true reflection of Christ.
I will be a light to my generation, a model of truth, purity, and love.
Through my life, many shall see Jesus and glorify God, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

PRAYER POINTS

  1. Lord, thank You for calling me to reflect Your glory.
  2. Father, forgive me for every ungodly example I’ve shown in the past.
  3. Holy Spirit, empower me to walk in truth and righteousness.
  4. Let my life be a visible testimony of Christ’s love.
  5. Deliver me from every habit that stains my example.
  6. Grant me wisdom and humility to lead others rightly.
  7. Make my home, workplace, and ministry a center of godly influence.
  8. Let Your grace preserve me in holiness till the end.
  9. Raise me as a light and model for this generation.
  10. I declare: I am an ambassador of Christ, shining His light wherever I go, in the name of Jesus!
