SOMEBODY TOUCHED ME!
(Luke 8:43–48; Mark 5:25–34)
1. The Context: A Cry in the Crowd
In Luke 8:43–48, a woman suffering from an issue of blood for twelve years pressed through the crowd and touched the hem of Jesus’ garment. Many people thronged Him that day, but only one touch drew virtue (power) from Him.
“And Jesus said, Somebody touched Me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of Me.” – Luke 8:46
This moment was not about physical contact, but spiritual connection. Her touch carried faith, desperation, and expectation. It was not casual, it was covenantal.
2. THE TYPES OF TOUCH AND THEIR SPIRITUAL IMPLICATIONS
A. The Touch of Faith
Scriptural Example: The woman with the issue of blood (Luke 8:43–48)
This is the touch that pulls power from God. It is born out of belief, desperation, and action.
Characteristics:
- It is intentional, not accidental.
- It reaches beyond the crowd’s noise and human protocol.
- It provokes divine response.
Result: Healing, restoration, and transformation.
Illustration:
Like a dying man reaching for the last dose of medicine, this woman reached for Jesus, not with her hands only, but with her heart. Faith made her touch a spiritual key that unlocked divine virtue.
B. The Touch of Sin or Defilement
Scriptural Example: Achan touched the accursed thing (Joshua 7:1–26).
Some touches bring contamination, not connection. When you touch what God forbids, spiritually or morally, you invite judgment, defeat, and separation from God.
Implication:
Every “forbidden touch” (unholy relationship, corruption, compromise, disobedience) cuts off divine flow.
Caution:
Don’t touch what God says not to touch, even if it looks harmless. Achan’s secret touch affected an entire nation.
C. The Touch of Compassion
Scriptural Example: Jesus touched the leper (Matthew 8:3).
This touch restores dignity to the rejected. It’s the touch of love that transmits healing, comfort, and belonging.
Benefit:
When we carry God’s heart, our touch (words, presence, actions) becomes a healing balm to others.
Illustration:
A nurse who tenderly cares for a patient’s wound touches with compassion, not duty, and the healing process quickens.
D. The Touch of Evil
Scriptural Example: Satan touched Job’s body (Job 2:5–7).
Not all touches are divine. Some touches are demonic manipulations, leading to affliction, oppression, or confusion.
Caution:
Guard your spiritual boundaries. An unguarded life, through sin, bitterness, or compromise, invites evil touch.
Preparedness:
Stay covered under the blood of Jesus and the shield of obedience.
E. The Touch of Anointing and Impartation
Scriptural Example: Elijah touched Elisha with his mantle (1 Kings 19:19).
This is the touch of transfer, when a divine calling, anointing, or assignment is passed on.
Implication:
One divine touch can change your destiny, ignite your calling, and activate spiritual gifts.
Illustration:
When Samuel anointed David, that oil was not mere liquid, it was divine touch that shifted him from shepherd to king.
F. The Touch of Agreement
Scriptural Example: “If two of you shall agree as touching anything…” – Matthew 18:19
This touch unites believers in faith for divine intervention. It represents unity, partnership, and combined faith.
Benefit:
It amplifies the power of prayer, multiplying results. Agreement in the Spirit moves heaven.
G. The Touch of Judgment
Scriptural Example: Uzzah touched the Ark of God (2 Samuel 6:6–7).
Some touches are presumptuous, handled without reverence or obedience. Uzzah meant well, but his touch cost him his life.
Caution:
Familiarity with holy things can be fatal. Never handle sacred things casually, whether the Word, worship, or God’s presence.
3. PREPAREDNESS FOR DIVINE TOUCH
Before divine touch comes, God often prepares the vessel:
- Purity of Heart: “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? …He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart.” (Psalm 24:3–4)
- Faith in Action: Faith is not passive; it presses through obstacles.
- Desperation with Reverence: The woman didn’t just desire healing; she revered the Healer.
- Focus: She touched Him, not His fame, not the crowd, but Him.
4. REPERCUSSIONS AND CAUTIONS
| Type of Touch | Positive Outcome | Negative Outcome if Misused |
|---|---|---|
| Touch of Faith | Healing and restoration | None – but faith must be genuine |
| Touch of Sin | None | Loss, curse, defeat |
| Touch of Compassion | Healing others | Pride or burnout if done in flesh |
| Touch of Evil | None | Affliction, bondage |
| Touch of Anointing | Empowerment | Imitation or fake anointing |
| Touch of Agreement | Miracles | Broken unity brings hindrance |
| Touch of Judgment | Holiness restored | Death, disgrace, divine anger |
5. SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS
- Many thronged Jesus that day, but only one touch mattered. Are you pressing for the Master or just part of the crowd?
- God knows the difference between a casual touch and a faith-filled one.
- There’s a touch that draws power and a touch that provokes wrath.
- Every true encounter with Jesus leaves a trace of transformation.
- To be touched by God is to never remain the same again.
6. PERSONAL EXAMPLES / ILLUSTRATIONS
-
Illustration 1:
Two people attend the same church service, one leaves healed, the other unchanged. The difference is not in the sermon but in the quality of the heart’s touch. -
Illustration 2:
A child running to the father for comfort experiences the touch of safety. But when that same child touches fire, pain follows. The touch determines the outcome. -
Illustration 3:
Moses touched the rod of God in obedience, and the Red Sea parted. Gehazi touched Naaman’s greed, and leprosy clung to him.
7. BENEFITS OF A DIVINE TOUCH

9. CONCLUSION
Many touched Jesus that day, but only one connected.
Her faith distinguished her from the multitude.
You may be surrounded by religious activity, but only a living, believing touch draws the power of God.
When God touches a person, life changes forever.
When sin touches a person, glory departs.
Choose today to reach out with faith and allow heaven’s virtue to flow into your life.
“Somebody touched Me…”, may that somebody be you today.
